Advanced Transportation Impact Study (TIS) Assessment Program (ONLINE PROGRAM)

Date/Time
25/05/2021 - 28/06/2021
8:00 am - 12:00 pm

This 9-module program will take place over a Tuesday and four(4) Mondays, in May and June.

Session Time – 8:45AM-12PM with 15 min mid-morning break

Module & Title Duration Dates
MODULE 1: Advanced Synchro Model Calibration
Presenter: Jordan Hart-Bishop, TMIG (The Municipal Infrastructure Group Ltd., a T.Y. Lin Company)
2.5 hr May 25
MODULE 2: Introduction to Modelling Software
Presenters:

  • Phil Weber, CIMA+ (Arcady/Rodel)
This session will introduce ARCADY, a program originating in the United Kingdom and used worldwide for the capacity analysis of roundabouts. It will provide some background on the research behind the development of ARCADY and the geometric parameters it relies upon as inputs, and provide a brief overview of the program itself and its features.
  • Keyur Shah (Vissim/Aimsun)
The application of micro-simulation software in the transportation planning and traffic engineering are beyond typical intersection assessment to find out delays, level of service and queuing. Typically, we have been observing the congestion in urban facilities extend to upstream intersections and therefore, the delays derived from a Synchro, Arcady software are underestimated.  Therefore, the application of micro-simulation tools is essential to conduct a ‘system-wide’ transportation assessment for various types of transportation facilities within a single platform.  For example, these tools allow to analyze the operational issues of freeways, interchange ramp terminals, roundabout, urban corridors with HOV and Transit lanes, etc.  This tools also allow to conduct a different level of analysis such as macro, meso and micro-simulation analysis for regional, area-level and local intersection assessment, respectively.
The application of these software used to assess various ‘what-if’ scenarios such as lane closure during construction, assess benefits with various transportation network improvements such as with HOV lanes/ roundabout, and also to visualize operational benefits with simulation to public and stakeholders.

MODULE 3: Existing and Future Conditions
Presenter: Kassel Prince, McIntosh Perry
A transportation impact study assesses potential changes to road network operations pre and post implementation of a proposed development or redevelopment. This presentation will examine the preparation of existing and future study conditions, it’s components and considerations and will identify key aspects of each.
1.25 hr May 31
MODULE 4: Four Step Model (Trip Generation / Distribution / Mode Split / Assignment)
Presenter: Kassel Prince, McIntosh Perry
Four step modeling is a procedure used for the forecasting of travel demand for a new or redeveloped site and applying this forecast to the study transport network.
1.25 hr
MODULE 5: Multi Modal Assessment (LOS)
Presenter: Shawn Doyle, Dillon Consulting
1.5 hr June 7
MODULE 6: Transportation Demand Management
Presenter(s): Paul Grove, Tong Wang, City of Vaughan
As the Province of Ontario continues to grow and accommodate new people and jobs, much of this growth is being directed to intensification areas. To ensure that this growth is sustainable, it is imperative that demand for single-occupancy vehicle (SOV) trips be managed effectively through Travel Demand Management (TDM) measures implemented through site development. Practicing TDM and encouraging sustainable transportation are becoming pivotal objectives and important considerations, changing the way we assess transportation impacts and make recommendations. The purpose of this presentation will be to introduce TDM, why it is important, how it is practiced, and how to incorporate it into site development and TIS. The presentation will also cover policies and procedures that are being developed and applied in the City of Vaughan.
1.5 hr
MODULE 7: Parking
Presenter: Ralph Bond, BA Group
1.5 hr June 21
MODULE 8: Traffic Safety & Warrants
Presenter(s): Soroush Salek, Behzad Rouhieh, & Sheetal Thukral, CIMA+
The integrated approach to land use planning and road safety is a promising avenue to improve safety because these two fields are closely connected. This course will explore how road safety impacts of new developments can be assessed through in-service road safety reviews (ISRSR) and road safety audits (RSA). ISRSRs identify safety improvements for roadways currently in use and RSAs can be conducted at all stages of a project life cycle from planning to in-service. The course will also review policies and warrants of some important traffic control devices, such as all-way STOP control, traffic signals, and pedestrian crossovers.
1.5 hr
MODULE 9: Site Plan Assessment
Presenter(s): Kenneth Chan, LEA Consulting
The site plan assessment process is a detailed review which examines the technical aspects of a proposed development. The design review focuses on safety, functionality and compatibility with the surrounding area, and explores potential safety or landscaping benefits it can bring to the neighbourhood. The module covers topics including site configuration, geometric design, site context, site and parking layout and impacts, parking garage layout, internal site circulation conflicts, pedestrian circulation and connections, AODA requirements, and auto-turn assessments.
